Chapter Fourteen
Not talking was going to be really hard. There was so much to take in which meant so much he wanted to say. He was like one of those people who goes to the cinema to see a film then wants to talk about every scene afterwards. Not that many people could remember every scene. He could. And heâd watched a lot of movies so could repeat back most scenes when asked, which of course no one ever did. He was used to it.
Most of the questions he got asked were about his feelings. He was as sensitive as the next dog⦠he looked round and saw a mean-looking Staffordshire Bull Terrier guarding its ownerâs belongings while he or she went for a swim. They were both terriers but something about this one, not the make; he liked Staffs as a rule, but this one⦠Okay, so maybe as sensitive as the next-dog-but-one sensitive, but it would have been nice to talk about other things. Of course they did but his opinions werenât asked often enough. He made a mental note to share more.
âHenry?â
Henry realised heâd been staring at the end of the ramp, like a diver concentrating before a particularly complicated manoeuvre. All he had to do was to step off the end and onto the sand but something was stopping him. Something other than his brain. He was fairly sure it wasnât the fact it might be hot. After the M25 services car park, he was okay with that. No, it was the image of the sand swallowing him whole.
âHenry?â Gwynne repeated. They both knew she couldnât ask him if he was okay.
He put out his right paw, tentatively, lowered it until it touched the sand then pressed. Yes, it sank but it didnât draw him in. He frowned, trying to remember the film he and Dan had watched where the sand had done that to the main character. Of course theyâd both expected the hero to be okay because he was the hero but no, never to be seen again. Being only ten minutes into the movie, that had shown them that no one was safe. In the rest of the film, the heroâs sidekick had stepped up and saved the day, for everyone other than the hero. Like Penfold to DangerMouse except that DangerMouse never actually dies.
Dan and Henry had spent the next hour discussing the film, Dan impressing Henry with how much heâd remembered. But then Dan easily impressed Henry. After Gwynne, Dan was Henryâs favourite person. Oh and except Dr Moss, and Mrs Moss, Sally at the DIY shop, her assistant Kerry, Rob from the rescue centre, Adam the chef andâ¦
âItâll be time to go home soon,â came a sarcastic quip from the impatient Gwynne.
Henry sighed. The automatic reaction would be to apologise, to appease her â âappeaseâ he mouthed then pursed his lips as Gwynne growled, but then realised his paw was aching, being held off the ground as it was.
Gwynne didnât need to say anything else.
